The Medicinal Chemistry Unit (MCU) is a multidisciplinary laboratory, which applies the highest level of chemical science to drug design and discovery process.
A major focus of the MCU is the development of new chemical compounds, which could serve as efficient drugs for the treatment of cancer, diabetes, obesity,
inflammation and neurodegenerative disorders. The design of putative drugs is based on biomechanistic rationale and the structural optimization of newly discovered lead compounds.
A diversified group of organic and analytical chemists, as well as molecular modeling experts interact to create a research environment that maximizes success rate of novel drug discovery. Projects conducted in MCU are separated in two major parts: “Small molecules”- including low molecular weight chemical leads and “Bio compounds”, which regards RNAi-, DNA- and peptide- based drugs.
Each of six MCU’s researchers is responsible for separate scientific project. A close collaboration with The Laboratory of Molecular Biology and Preclinical Research enables quick transition of newly obtained compounds - a putative drugs, into the phase of testing of their biological activities.
Our facility is equipped with state-of-the art devices: multiple analytic HPLCs, GC, preparative HPLC, NMR spectrometer, parallel synthesis reactors, automatic flash chromatography systems, UV and FT-IR spectrometers, DNA/RNA synthesizer and lyophilisatores.
