Rapid global development, progressing industrialization and extended human lifespan, although improve general quality of living, result in the increased prevalence
of lifestyle diseases, i.e. type 2 diabetes, obesity and the metabolic syndrome. Although these conditions clearly have a genetic component,
the rapid increase in the prevalence of lifestyle diseases in populations throughout the world suggests the significant contribution of environmental factors.
Obesity and metabolic syndrome - the additional risk factors for type 2 diabetes, arise due to an imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure. Non-pharmacological approaches including diet modification, regular exercise and patient education form the cornerstones of therapy.
However, when lifestyle modification fails to achieve or sustain adequate glycaemic control, oral antidiabetic agents (insulin sensitizers, α-glucosidase inhibitors and β-cell secretases) or insulin therapy are typically used to manage the disease. Thoughtful combinations of these medications allow the prescriber to target many of the physiological abnormalities which are intrinsic to type 2 diabetes. However, this treatments display a lot of side effects.
Celon Pharma research strategy is focused on finding drugs with new mechanism of action to improve diabetes and obesity treatment and to reduce the risk of adverse effects.
